Als we het hebben over Banda Aceh kunnen we niet anders dan beginnen bij onze uitvalsbasis: het huis van Aart en Ada. Van hieruit werd menig tripje ondernomen.

When we are talking about Banda Aceh we simply have to start with our base: Aart and Ada's home. Many trips were made from here.

Mijn eerste trip was op de dag van onze aankomst. Terwijl Conny en Gezinus een uurtje gingen slapen en Aart aan het werk was liet ik samen met Ada Porky uit. Onder het wandelen kwamen we over de Nederlandse geschiedenis in Aceh te praten en van het een kwam het ander en even later gingen we per auto naar dit Indonesische oorlogskerkhof.
Bijzonder is dat op de voormuur de geschiedenis van Indonesië is uitgebeeld.

My first trip was on the day we arrived. While Conny and Gezinus were taking a nap and Aart was out working, Ada and I went walking Porky. As we were walking we came to talk about the Dutch history in Aceh, one thing led to another and moments later we went by car to this Indonesian war-cemetery.
Special is the front wall on which the history of Indonesia is portrayed.

Het begint links met de aankomst van VOC schepen en gewapende blanke soldaten, die het Indonesische volk onderwerpen.

It starts on the left side with the arrival of VOC ships and armed white soldiers, who subject the Indonesians.

In een pand direct naast Aart en Ada zit de kleermaker.
Op de vraag wat voor kleren we het beste konden meenemen gaf Ada het praktische antwoord: een paar voorbeelden, want je kunt net zo makkelijk en goedkoop hier in Banda Aceh wat laten maken van dunne katoen, die geschikt is voor het klimaat.

Next door to Aart and Ada's we find a tailor.
When asked what kind of clothing we should bring, Ada had a very practical reply: some examples, because it's easy and cheap to have something made here locally using cotton that suits the climate.

Bijna dagelijks gaat Ada in de stad boodschappen doen voor het eten.

Almost daily Ada goes to town to buy food.

Een bezienswaardigheid in Banda Aceh waar je niet om heen kunt is de moskee.
Ooit verwoest door de Nederlanders tijdens de politionele acties van Van Heutz, daarna door de Nederlanders weer herbouwd.
Door de tsunami licht beschadigd, maar inmiddels weer geheel hersteld.

A landmark you cannot miss in Banda Aceh is the mosque.
In the past destroyed by the Dutch during the policing actions of van Heutz, then rebuild by the same Dutch.
Slightly damaged by the tsunami, but meanwhile completely repaired.

Direct naast de moskee is een ingang van de markt.

Immediately next to the mosque is an entrance of the market.

Een verhaal apart is het versturen van kaarten naar het thuisfront.
Kaarten zijn in Banda Aceh niet in winkels te krijgen. Daarom gingen we naar het VVV waar we alleen kaarten konden krijgen, niet kopen. Dat los je dan op door het doen van een donasie.

Sending postcards home is an altogether different story.
Postcards are not on sale in the shops of Banda Aceh. Therefore we went to the local tourist office where we could only cards for free, not buy them. To relief your conscience you then make a donasie.

Banda Aceh heeft een centraal festival terrein. Prominent aanwezig daarop is de RI-001.
Deze oude Dakota is een stukje Indonesische geschiedenis.
In 1946 gaf Nederland toe aan het onafhankelijkheidsstreven van Indonesië. Maar er zat wel een addertje onder het gras. Of de toenmalige leiders Hatta en Soekarno maar even naar Den Haag wilden komen om de soevereiniteits-akte te tekenen.
Maar hoe konden ze daarheen? Er werd een beroep gedaan op de relatief rijke provincie Aceh en al spoedig kon dit vliegtuig worden aangeschaft.
Het was het eerste vliegtuig van de Garuda Indonesian Airways.

This old Dakota is a piece of Indonesian history.
When the Dutch government agreed to sovereignty for Indonesia in 1946, they put a catch: the Indonesian leaders Hatta and Soekarno had to come to The Hague to sign the treaty.
But how could they get there? An appeal was made on the relatively rich province of Aceh and in due time this plane could be bought.
Afterwards it became the first plane of the Garuda Indonesian Airways.

En als we dan toch monumenten aan het bezichtigen zijn:
Wat dacht u van deze oude koloniale huizen?

And once we are taking monuments:
How about these old colonial houses?

Een oude Nederlandse watertoren, waar we helaas geen jaartal aan konden vinden.

Onder die naam staat het oude Nederlandse ereveld nog steeds bekend.

Op die ene grafsteen stond: Koeta Radja, dat is de oude naam van Banda Aceh.
Banda Aceh betekend: Haven van Aceh
En als we dan toch bezig zijn: De taal in Indonesië is Maleis, wat zoals de naam doet vermoeden ook in Maleisië gesproken wordt.
Zowel door de Engelse kolonialen in Maleisië als de Nederlandse kolonialen werd een schrijfwijze c.q. spelling gemaakt voor de taal.
Daarbij gebruikten de Nederlanders de tj waar de Engelsen de c schreven. De fonetische uitspraak is hetzelfde. Indonesië gebruikt tegenwoordig ook de Engelse spelling dus:
Atjeh = Aceh
Tjalang = Calang

And while we are on this subject: The Indonesian language is Malaysian, which as the name implies is also spoken in Malaysia.
Both the British and Dutch colonials developed a way to write the language.
The Dutch used tj where the British used the c. The phonetic pronunciation is the same. Today Indonesia also uses the British spelling:
Atjeh = Aceh
Tjalang = Calang

Valt het op dat er maar weinig hoge bomen zijn?

which brings us to the harbor of the Harbor of Aceh.
Does it stand out how few high trees there are?

Dit gezicht is de hele wereld overgegaan.

This sight went all over the world.

maar deze vindt ik veel indrukwekkender.
Het geeft nog beter aan hoe groot de kracht van water is en tegelijkertijd hoe groot de menselijke veerkracht is.

but for me this is much more impressive.
It shows the tremendous force of water and at the same time how big the human resilience is.

Op de meeste plaatsen is dit echter de weinig glamourrijke werkelijkheid.
Men werkt hard, maar er is zo oneindig veel nog op te bouwen.

But in many places this the glamourless reality.
People are working hard, but there is so much to be done.

Banda Aceh heeft een soort openlucht museum, waarin van alle districten van Sumatra een traditioneel huis staat.
Dit huis is van Aceh, met boven de deur de poort van Aceh.
Ook dit museum is aangetast door de tsunami en was niet echt toegankelijk.

Banda Aceh has a sort of open air museum, which contains characteristic houses from all districts of Sumatra.
This house stands for Aceh, above the door the Gate of Aceh.
This museum was also damaged by the tsunami and not really accessible.

En omdat je met vakantie bent moet dat voor de gein een keer geprobeerd worden
