De eerste twee weken van de reis brachten we door in en om Banda Aceh, wat op de noordpunt van Sumatra ligt.
Om Banda Aceh is daarbij vrij ruim op te vatten:
Een weekend op Pulau Weh ook wel bekend als het eiland Sabang, noordwestelijk van de punt van Sumatra.
Een trip naar Calang, wat ruim 180 kilometer schuin beneden Banda Aceh aan de zuidkust van Sumatra ligt.
Korte karakteristiek van dit gebied: tsunami rampgebied

De derde week speelden we echt toerist met het maken van een Noord Sumatra tour.

Hoe kom je ertoe om juist hier op vakantie te gaan?

Tijd om kennis te maken met twee van onze reisgenoten, die tevens onze gastheer en gastvrouw waren in de eerste twee weken:

The first two weeks of the journey we spent in and around Banda Aceh, which lies on the northern tip of Sumatra.
Around Banda Aceh should be taken in a broad sense:
A weekend on Pulau Weh, also known as Sabang, which lies northwest of the tip of Sumatra.
A trip to Calang, 180 kilometer diagonal below Banda Aceh on the south coast of Sumatra.

The third week we spent being real tourists making a North Sumatra tour.

What brings one to spending a holiday in this area?

Time to meet two of our fellow travelers, who have also been our hosts for the first two weeks:

Aart

Aart is "Sanitation specialist" wat zoveel wil zeggen dat hij deskundige is op het gebied van drinkwater productie en - minstens zo belangrijk - het milieu verantwoord afvoeren van afvalwater.

Aart werkt in Indonesië aan de wederopbouw van het door de tsunami getroffen gebied.

Aart

Aart is a "Sanitation specialist" which means as much as being an expert in the area of potable water production and -equally important- the environmentally save disposal of waste water.

Aart works in Indonesia at reconstruction of the tsunami stricken area.

Ada

Ada is de vrouw van Aart en trotse grootmoeder van haar eerste kleindochter, wiens foto boven haar in de schilderij-lijst gestoken is.

Aart en Ada wonen in een fraai huis in Banda Aceh.

Ada heeft ons in de eerste weken veel van de stad laten zien, op de momenten dat Aart aan het werk was.

Aart op zijn beurt heeft ons veel zaken van en rond zijn werkgebied laten zien.

Ada

Ada is Aarts wife and proud grandmother of her first granddaughter, whose picture can be seen in the picture frame above her.

Aart and Ada live in a great house in Banda Aceh.

Ada has shown us around Banda Aceh in the first weeks, at times that Aart was working.

Aart in his turn has shown us many things concerning his work.

Hoe kom je in Banda Aceh?
Nou je stapt in zo'n ding en hebt een slordige 11 uur geduld. Dan ben je in Kuala Lumpur waar je een paar uur wacht.

How does one get to Banda Aceh?
Well you board one of these things and be patient for roughly 11 hours. Then you find yourself in Kuala Lumpur where you sit and wait some hours.

Totdat je doorvliegt naar Medan

Until your flight to Medan leaves

In Medan volgde natuurlijk het gebruikelijke circus met visa, paspoort-controle etc.
Maar! buiten werden we opgewacht door Aart en Ada, waarop natuurlijk een hartelijke begroeting volgde.
Waarop we van Medan International naar Medan Domestic liepen compleet met koffers en kruiers.
En op Medan Domestic werd de hele boel weer ingecheckt.
Daarna..... moesten we een uurtje of wat wachten (zucht)
Uiteindelijk vlogen we dan langs de noordkant van Sumatra naar Banda Aceh.
In Banda Aceh werden we afgehaald door de chauffeur van Aart en Ada die ons naar huis bracht.

In Medan you get the usual circus with visa, passport checks etc.
But! outside we found Aart and Ada waiting for us, which resulted in a happy greeting party.
After which we relocated from Medan International, complete which luggage and porters, to Medan Domestic.
At Medan Domestic we checked the lot in again.
After which... we had to wait another hour or so (sigh)
Eventually we flew over the north side of Sumatra to Banda Aceh.
In Banda Aceh we were met by the driver of Aart and Ada, who took us home.

Daar werden we enthousiast begroet door Porky.

Eindelijk kregen we de ruimte en de rust om even bij te komen en, niet in de laatste plaats, de tijd om wat aan de warmte te wennen.

At last we got some time and rest to recover from the journey and, last but not least, time to adapt to the temperature.

Na de Noord Sumatra tour waren we terug in Medan en ja helaas, van daaruit ging het terug naar Nederland. Ik heb de camera niet weer uit de tas gehaald totdat we in de trein zaten van Schiphol naar Enschede.

After the North Sumatra tour we were back in Medan and alas, from there we went back to The Netherlands. I left the camera in its bag until we were in the train from Schiphol to Enschede.

Moe, bruin en uitermate voldaan!

Tired, tanned and utterly satisfied!
